Coleman was born in Blackpool Lancashire. Coleman graduated from Arnold School Blackpool, where she scored straight A's for A-levels. On the 21st March, 2012 Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat made it clear at a press conference that Coleman was set to play the Doctor's companion alongside Matt Smith after Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill have left the show. Moffat said that he chose Coleman to be the companion because she could work best with Smith. In addition, Moffat noted that she spoke faster than Smith.
